CURTIA WRIGHT BRINGS BLACK JOY BEAUTIFULLY TO LIFE
When Converse and Foot Locker approached us to create a mural representing Black joy, we knew Toronto-based artist Curtia Wright would be the perfect fit. Using bold and vivid colour, the narratives in Curtia’s artwork mostly focus on telling the stories of Black peoples of the African diaspora, speaking to her heritage as a Jamaican-Canadian.
The piece, called ‘To Gather,’ pays homage to Black music, dance and intergenerational bonding, representing musicians and artists including Portia White and Jackie Shane. Reflecting on the largest mural she’s created in her career to date, Curtia says the project “was a dream to be a part of. When asked what Black joy meant to me, I immediately thought about images of family and friends gathered together sharing laughs, food, dancing and enjoying other’s company.”
