LES COULEURS D’UN NOUVEAU QUARTIER
ArtWalk is a new cultural venue in Ontario’s fast-developing Vaughan region. It’s part of a 100-acre master-planned hub, SmartVMC, launched in the summer of 2021 during the COVID pandemic by transforming a vacant warehouse with 30,000 square feet of art. We collaborated with the venue, and local and international artists (sometimes remotely), to create the four memorable murals:
Here Comes the Sun by Spanish artist Ricardo Cavolo, who directed the painting from Spain. The bold colours and sunny illustrations are meant to symbolize the power of sharing your inner light with the world to get through difficult times.
Better Together by Toronto artist Ben Johnston, who stamped his signature typography onto the building using bold pinks and reds to bring warmth, joy and optimism.
Birds of a Feather by multidisciplinary artist Jerry Rugg (a.k.a. BirdO), who brought his characteristic blend of animals and geometric shapes with a mural of a long-beaked kingfisher.
An Exploration of Our Timespace by Montreal-based artist Jeremy Shantz, an abstract piece showing a disembodied character floating in a liminal space. Shantz created the drawing and worked with local artists to complete the project, showing the different elements it takes to build a community.
